Joscha Steffens – 𝖓𝖔𝖑𝖎 𝖒𝖊 𝖙𝖆𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖗𝖊
2025
𝖓𝖔𝖑𝖎 𝖒𝖊 𝖙𝖆𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖗𝖊 is a three-channel video installation based on a two-day role-play session with members of the Rizalista community Samahan ng Tatlong Persona Solo Dios of Kinabuhayan. The recording took place in the forests of the sacred Mount Banahaw in the Philippines. Its scenes and characters are inspired by the final, tragic chapter of José Rizal's 1887 novel Noli Me Tangere.
Three key figures of the novel — Sisa and her two sons, Crispin and Basilio — meet in a dreamlike, meta-level setting of play, worship, and religious dynamics. The rhythm of the three-channel video loop is introduced by the voice of the mysterious philosopher Tasio. 𝖓𝖔𝖑𝖎 𝖒𝖊 𝖙𝖆𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖗𝖊 is part of the 'Oculus' exhibition, curated by Patrick Flores at the Heidelberger Kunstverein and commissioned by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) as part of the 'Philippines as Guest of Honor' program of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2025.
